Hey Girls,
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Is this basically a combo of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Castor Oil? I think I read on one of the threads that someone replaced EVOO with grapeseed oil.
What combination worked best for u girls? I have combo skin and just wanted to hear from a combo skinned person what worked best.
Thanks in advance,
Anna |

I'm a combo skinned person! I use olive oil (regular cold pressed, not virgin. But will use EVOO next time), grapeseed oil (for its antioxidant properties), rosehip oil (for rehydrating dry parts), wheat germ oil (for vit E)and lavender and ylangylang essential oils for the smell and because they're good for open pores on my T-zone.
So far this combination works great. But the thing is, don't ask me what porpotion of each I put in, because my recipe changes everytime I make a new batch! HTH some! |

Thanks pumpingmommy. Darn, I only bought castor oil, ylang ylang, peppermint and lemon essential oil. I did not buy the grapeseed nor the others u mentioned. Maybe I will try the ones I have first. I don't have Extra Virgin Olive Oil but have regular olive oil at home. Does EVOO really make that much of a difference? |

Hi Hayleighs_Mom,
I am the one who replaced the olive oil with grapeseed oil. I did so because I found the combination of grapeseed oil with castor oil to be "less heavy" on my face. I think, however, that's just a preference of mine ... and not necessarily valid for anyone else.
I would begin with a 50/50 mix of Extra Virgin Olive Oil with the Castor Oil ... and see how you like it.
I, personally, wouldn't put peppermint in it because it's a very strong essential oil. Certainly the Ylang Ylang and/or the Lemon essential oils would be good to add ... just be sure to add only a few drops of each.
I put Sweet Orange Oil in mine because:
a) I had it on hand
b) I love the smell of it
c) I find it very "calming" for me.
The reason it calls for Extra Virgin Olive Oil is because that's the first pressing of Olive Oil and hence, it has the maximum of nutrients in it. Olive Oil is the "nourishing" oil of the mix ... the castor oil being the "cleansing" oil.
The mixture will certainly "work" with the Olive Oil you have on hand ... but your skin won't get as nourished with it as it would with Extra Virgin.
Before I would go out and make a whole bunch of purchases, I'd certainly try the OCM with what you currently have on hand ... and then if you find you like it [I found that I love it!] then you can get the Extra Virgin next time.
Good luck

You can easily buy it at the supermarket. I agree peppermint EO is strong, but I use it in my ACV toner. I just use 2 drops in 8oz, but LOVE the way it feels!!! And, I think it smells totally delicious. |

I have used the OCM a few times (since recently discovering it here!) and have been loving it. So far I have been using a 50/50 mix of cold pressed Castor Oil and EVOO. After reading the responses here, I think I will try adding some essentials oils as well. I was wondering how much you add to the mix? I make a batch of oil fresh each time, and it takes only about a tsp. of each to do my face and neck. I think just one drop of an EO would probably be enough for such a small amount?
I think I'll add rosehip (for dryness, and is also supposed to help for hyperpigmentation, I've read), and maybe also a nice smelling one - the sweet orange oil sounds wonderful!
Two thumbs up for oil! |

By the way, I tried a bare bones version of the ACV(as I'm waiting for my stuff in the mail) last night and this morning. Just 50% Apple Cider Vinegar and 50% H20. I am sooo amazed at the results. I don't remember my skin feeling this soft in a LOOOOONG time! I had a pretty nasty breakout and the pimples all look like they are shrinking and disappearing! I cannot wait to try the real thing. Yes, now I remember why I bought the peppermint EO, it was for the ACV toner. Hooray for this forum! I am sooo happy I stumbled across it. |

Hi Nymue,
Actually you use surprisingly few drops of essential oil into the mix. One drop might be too strong for just that small amount.
I mix mine in an 8 ounce "squeeze" bottle ... and add 10 drops of sweet orange to it.
If I were going to add lavender or ylang ylang, I'd probably limit them to 10 drops each as well ... and as Faith says ... she adds only 2 drops of peppermint oil to her toner.
[By the way thanks for that tip Faith ... I never thought of the peppermint for the toner! I've always used peppermint for "foot" lotions because I love the cooling effect of the peppermint. ]
I have an aromatherapy book around here somewhere that tells you how much you use ... but I'm sure that there are sites online that will also tell you their properties and recommended amounts.
Each essential oil has certain properties ... and they are very concentrated volatile oils. You don't need a lot to get the desired effect.

I have been adding Castor oil to my homemade Dr H cleansing cream and it does a great job at sucking out any impurities from my pores. You only need a little. |

Pasting this new thread here in the effort to keep this all in the one (as much as possible) thread. We seem to have all these new threads popping up about just slight variations of current topics so I thought it'd be nice and much easier later on if we kept everything together.
Also, Carol - yu can find discussion about the ratios here: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=9087 and here http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=9100 HTH

Hi Big83,
I'm still using OCM ... have been since August ... and I still love it. It takes off all my makeup ... leaves my skin feeling great ... and if I do get the odd spot ... it goes away much more quickly than it ever did before.
I got my girlfriend using it and she's amazed. She's been using it for about a month now ... and hasn't used anything else to cleanse her face. She uses 50/50 Olive Oil/Castor Oil ...
We both use the ACV toner as well ... and I also use the aspirin mask almost daily ... in preparation for my mineral makeup.
Glad you're liking it so far ...

I've stopped using the OCM cause it was breaking me out - got bumpy skin all across my jawline and chin. Very depressing.
But I've realized why:
1. The castor oil I was using was most probably not cold pressed, it came from the chemists.
2. I was overdoing it, gave myself a facial steam every evening.
I've got sensitive and reactive skin, and I should've eased the OCM into my life and not jumped into it like there was no tomorrow...
So I'm going to find myself some good CO and try again... |

Ruth, you don't even have to use CO for a great OCM - I couldn't find any CO at the beginning and I was only using EVOO mixed with EOs and other oils - grapeseed, rose hip seed, wheatgerm etc - and it worked just as well, if not better. And you don't even have to steam your face to make it give a thorough cleansing job, a warm towel will do just fine (I for one can't stand steams, my skin certainly doesn't). I only have a bit of CO in my OCM mix simply because psychologically I think it cleanses better (knowing the drawing properties of CO, and my skin does have a lot of gunk to be drawn out ) |

I think I want the CO for the same reasons u do PumpingMummy - more psychological than absolute necessity. And I definitley think your right about the steaming - my face didn't like it at all. I have been using the mixture I have on occasion (since my skin has cleared up a bit after the last dissaster) and then I've skipped the whole steaming proceedure and just used a wet facial cloth. Saves time as well! |

Ruth steaming really breaks my skin out too and if it's any consolation I gave up on the Oil Cleansing Method, I just didn't like it, I much prefer the homemade Dr Hauschka Cleansing Cream. |

I would like to try the castor oil/EVOO but not sure what I am supposed to buy? Is it not the usual stuff you get at the Chemist? Also would it be ok to open an evening primrose oil capsule and use that? |

Those of you not having success with OCM: have you tried making it with polysorbate 80 and/or PEG-7? I have to add those (or similar chemicals) to my CO/EVOO mix to rinse off completely. Just using oils by themselves made me break out. I use 50:50 CO:EVOO, and about 5% each of polysorbate 80 and PEG-7 (along with some lavender and ylang ylang eo). |
