I have a question for those who have experience with self tanners. It's summer in New Zealand, and I'm embarrassed when I wear shorts because for the first time in my life, my legs are noticeably white!
I tried the ones sold in the grocery store (Jergens and Dove), but even after several applications, the color was so subtle there was no point in using it, and the fragrances were overpowering.
I want to order a self tanner from EDS and I'm wondering if there's one that's dark enough to do some good, but doesn't wear off in telltale patches.
Any ideas? Thanks. |

For legs, I prefer to use Air Stocking, which isn't a semi-permanent product but washes off if you scrub it with soapy water. It gives a fabulous, flawless finish with excellent coverage. |

I've tried Fake Bake which is available on EDS and gives a beautiful dark brown color, especially the Xtreme gel version. However, these did fade patchy on me (especially the Xtreme). I think keeping your legs better moisturized would help it fade more evenly; I never was very diligent about applying moisturizer every day.
Another one that EDS sells that is supposed to be awesome is St. Tropez which I've bought but haven't tried yet. I believe the lotion version is said to last longer and fade more evenly than the mousse but since I haven't tried either I can't say for sure.
There are some self-tanners sold in drugstores that aren't the gradual tanners like the Dove and Jergens you mentioned. Bain de Soleil's Streakguarde self-tanner gave me a natural fairly dark color. L'Oreal's self tanners are pretty popular too but turned orange on my pale skin. You have to be more careful when applying regular self-tanners than the gradual ones but the color payoff is usually worth it, at least to me. |

To avoid patchiness, it is best to exfoliate really well before applying self-tanner. Also, do not apply self-tanner to your legs if you've just shaved/waxed.
Keep your skin well nourished after applying your self-tanning products, as this will extend the longevity of your faux tan.
A great package to consider:
Fake Bake Lotion Tri-Pak (Polish, Self-Tanning Lotion, Smoothie)

St. Tropez is also very, very good. In fact, St. Tropez is touted & used by Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. Hey, if it's good enough for "Posh", it's good enough for we average folk too, right?

Has anyone used the Neutrogena tanning spray from the drugstore? It's supposed to spray on with a color so you can see where you've put it. I've used Jergens and also Bath and Body Works has a really great smelling gradual tanner that has a shimmer to it, but I've never ventured into the more serious spray tanners. I would reccommend that BBW gradual tanner though if you don't like the smell of Jergens. |

I love TanTowels. I think they sell them on EDS. Professional spray tan like mystic tan work as well, but they tend to fade strangely so you end up exfoliating them off after 4 or 5 days. |

Thanks for the replies and tips. I'd heard that it's important to exfoliate before application, but I didn't know about moisturizing every day afterward.
I'm curious about something: Why is it not okay to apply self tanner after shaving or waxing? Will it cause a rash? |

I believe the answer to that question is waxing and shaving will open your pores, so applying it too soon after hair removal will create "dots" because the self tanner will seep into your pores. |

I've had really good luck with Tan Towels and especially Neostrata self tanners. Lancome and Clarins also have really nice self tanners. |

I have also had good luck with St Tropez and Tan Towels. I have never been able to work with those spray bottles, but do like the Mystic Tan. If you are in a hurry and want to get something at the drugstore, the Loreal Sublime products seem best. |

I have used the Neutrogena tanning spray and it still streaks, which I hate. The Jergens gradual lotion is nicer, because the color is subtle and gets darker over time. I have used the Loreal Sublime Facial Tan towels and I broke out on my face. I am going to try out the Bath and Body tanner, because I hate the way these Self Tanners smell. |

Me too. They all seem to have a funky odor.
I think I'm just hopeless with self tanners because I managed to get streaks even with tanning towels. But I'm embarrassed by my white legs so I'll keep trying. |

alohagirl, have you checked outwww.sunless.com ? This site has lots of information on self-tanning products as well as application tips. I tend to get streaks too but I've been reading up on this site and am getting some ideas for better application.
One trick a friend of mine uses is to rub a very thin layer of a body oil on her legs a few minutes before you apply the self-tanner. This helps the tanner spread more evenly. I haven't tried this yet but her legs are always streak-free so she may be on to something. |

I have tried many self tanners ,I am a red head, My favorite is Fusion. It is more costly but is it worth it ,I have used the same one for 2 years .I only use it in the summer so last longer ,but the color is very natural. People ask if I just came back for some place warm. Live in Canada .Worth the price |

Go to any newstand and pick up the April issue of InStyle. They review a whole bunch of beauty products and give their reviews and which are the best for specific problems. There is a section specifically for the best self-tanners. That should help you narrow down the options. |
